![]() Action fans may not care about the presentation either way, since the core gameplay is all about stabbing and slicing things up into little bits. Luckily the music I've heard so far is great and mixes a good number of 80s-guitar rock with some nice symphonic melodies. The English translations gets too cheesy for its own good and reminds me of the Sonic X and Duel Masters anime dubs that have been known to make some people take up lip reading. To be honest, the Japanese version of the game had a much better cast in this regard with big-name talent and some pretty solid performances. Almost completely narrated by professional voice actors, Neo has an awful lot of audio chit-chat. I attribute this slightly more grown-up look to the influence of Studio 4C Animation (Animatrix), which has provided more than 45 minutes of anime-quality cutscenes to help tell the story.Īnother example of how the Shining Force series has evolved is with its vocal presentation. As familiar as Shining Force Neo may appear stylistically, though, it's a little more mature than the other games in the series. Centaurs, Beastmen, Birdmen, and a number of other returning humanoids make up the majority of the world's population and it definitely gives the characters a look all their own. ![]() Like all the Shining Force games before it, Neo's universe is overpopulated with a large number of familiar races and mythological creatures. ![]() As for the story itself, it follows the exploits of Max - a seventeen-year-old knight in training who has been spending the last two years preparing to become an elite solider known as a "Force." After his training grounds are attacked by a surprise wave of monsters, however, Max's teacher sends him back to his hometown of Greensleeves to finish his quest to become a Force and meet up with his family to find out what happened to Max's missing older brother, Cain. In fact, Neo has some of the most conversational examples that I've seen in an RPG for quite some time, and it makes games like Final Fantasy VIII and Xenosaga look like they were written for people with ADD. Of the all the time I spent with the game so far, a good third of it was comprised of dialogue and cutscenes, as the characters in Shining Force Neo are rather longwinded in nature. Recently, I had the chance to give the first two hours of the English version a spin in the old debug unit, and found myself surprised at how much of a narrative the game actually has.
